Getting started

Install and update

On Windows 10/11, install the SOCOM Classic Launcher from socomclassic.com/download, open it, choose Install or Update, then Play. The launcher downloads the latest cumulative game payload in one update even if previous releases were skipped. Keep player settings. SmartScreen may show Unknown publisher because the installer is not code-signed; only run it if obtained from the official site. If updating fails, note the launcher error and whether the game is still running. The game and launcher are separate processes. Consult the website-published release notes for the current build.

Game crashes or will not launch

For a Windows launch crash, note whether it happens in the launcher or after Play, plus your Windows version, GPU model, and exact message. In the game Start menu, try SOCOM Classic - DirectX 11 Compatibility if DirectX 12 fails. Update the GPU driver from the GPU or laptop vendor, restart, and try Low graphics if the menu opens. Intel UHD 630 device-hung crashes have been reported; these steps are mitigations, not a confirmed fix. The installer includes Microsoft VC++ and GameInput prerequisites. After a game crash, reopen the game, go to Settings > Crash Reports, and share only Copy Summary or error text in the private helpdesk command. Do not share a full minidump, password, token, account cookie, or private path. Some hard hangs may only create an unexpected-session record.

Steam Deck and Proton

SOCOM Classic is built and supported for Windows x64; SteamOS/Linux and Proton are experimental and have not been validated end to end, including launcher updates, sign-in, GameInput, voice chat, and online play. Steam Deck users can try Desktop Mode: install or add the official Windows launcher as a non-Steam game, enable Proton compatibility in Steam properties, then launch it. If the installer or launcher fails, note your Proton version, SteamOS version, and exact screen or error; no Proton version is confirmed to work. The launcher and game may need to be launched from the same Proton prefix; keep private credentials private and keep account security checks enabled. For built-in controls or a USB/Bluetooth PS4/Xbox pad, use a Steam Input layout, avoid a second mapper, and verify live highlights in Settings > Mouse / Controller. For a built-in, USB, 3.5 mm, or Bluetooth headset, choose output/input in SteamOS sound settings and test microphone access; Proton voice capture is unverified. Recommend Windows for confirmed support.

Playing the game

Game modes and objectives

SOCOM Classic has online SEAL-versus-terrorist round-based matches and offline play with bots. Players choose weapons and equipment in the Armory; objectives vary by map and may include planting or defusing a bomb, rescuing hostages, or eliminating the opposing team. The server list shows each lobby's input requirement. Published game changes require a launcher update; upcoming preview notes describe work still being tested.

Included maps

Configured playable map catalog (online rotation can differ by lobby): SOCOM 2 (22): FROSTFIRE, BLIZZARD, NIGHT STALKER, DESERT GLORY, RAT'S NEST, ABANDONED, THE RUINS, BLOOD LAKE, BITTER JUNGLE, DEATH TRAP, SANDSTORM, FISH HOOK, CROSSROADS, FOX HUNT, THE MIXER, VIGILANCE, REQUIEM, GUIDANCE, CHAIN REACTION, SUJO, ENOWAPI, SHADOW FALLS; SOCOM 1 (10): BLIZZARD, FROSTFIRE, ABANDONED, DESERT GLORY, NIGHT STALKER, RAT'S NEST, BITTER JUNGLE, BLOOD LAKE, DEATH TRAP, THE RUINS; Other Worlds (3): DUST II, INFERNO, BLOOD GULCH. The SOCOM I and SOCOM II pools contain separate versions of names they share.

Damage in the published game

In published 0.4.2-beta1, players still start with 100 HP. Forty-two SOCOM II firearms have weapon-specific close-range damage adapted to this 100-HP system. A DE .50 body hit kills in one shot and a Mark 23 body hit in two; other pistols and lower-power SMGs need more hits. Shotguns depend on how many pellets land at close range. This is not an exact recreation of the original game's region-specific health and armor. Friendly bullets and explosions can hurt teammates; falls also cause damage. M67 and HE grenades, PMN mines and claymores now have a 5-metre damage radius, with cover still blocking blasts. See the full 0.4.2-beta1 release notes at https://www.socomclassic.com/release-notes/0.4.2-beta1#fix-85 and #fix-130.

Ranks, match points and leaderboard

Published 0.4.2-beta1 adds earned online career ranks and a top-ten Player Ranking screen. The original insignias are Ensign, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Captain and Admiral; new accounts begin Unranked. Career points use signed online results: 15 per match win, 1 per kill, 2 per assist, 1 per round win, 8 per primary objective and 3 per bonus objective, minus 10 per friendly kill. Promotion also requires completed matches: Ensign 1; Lieutenant 5 matches and 40 points; Lieutenant Commander 15 and 200; Captain 35 and 500; Admiral 75 and 1200. These fixed thresholds suit a small player base. Offline and bot-practice results do not count. Career points differ from match scoreboard and MVP points; there is no Elo rating. The in-game top ten and website leaderboard include opted-in public profiles only. The original SOCOM II manual confirms the five insignias and top-ten screen, but does not specify these SOCOM Classic promotion thresholds. See https://www.socomclassic.com/release-notes/0.4.2-beta1#fix-107.

Hardware and audio

Controllers on Windows

Windows 10/11: connect an Xbox pad or PlayStation controller before launching the game; start with USB to isolate Bluetooth pairing problems. Check Settings > Mouse / Controller for live input highlights and select Automatic, Xbox, or PlayStation button labels. DualSense/PS5 has a native input path; if it is not detected, install the bundled Prerequisites/GameInputRedist.msi and restart the game. For DualShock 4/PS4, if there are no live highlights, try one mapper such as Steam Input or DS4Windows. Use native input OR one mapper, not two at once, to avoid duplicate input. A mapper can present a PlayStation pad as Xbox; switch button labels manually if needed. Settings offers sensitivity, dead zone, invert, and vibration test. A controller is required for gameplay in controller-only rooms; mouse and keyboard still work in menus. Other lobby requirements are shown in the lobby list. Physical PS4 USB/Bluetooth behavior has not been fully verified on every PC.

Headsets and voice chat

Windows 10/11 headset setup: connect USB/3.5 mm/Bluetooth headset, set the intended output and input as Windows default devices, and verify the microphone in Windows Sound settings and microphone privacy permissions. In-game open Settings > Voice Chat to enable voice, choose the microphone, and adjust voice volume. Hold Left Alt on keyboard or LB/L1 on a controller for push-to-talk; the keyboard key can be changed. Voice is captured only while held. Incoming team radio defaults to left ear; Radio playback can be set to Both ears. If there is no sound, check Windows output device and headset mute; if no transmit, check Windows input meter, in-game mic selection, push-to-talk, and app microphone permission. A Bluetooth headset can switch to lower-quality hands-free playback when its microphone is active; a wired/USB test helps isolate that.

Getting started guides

Update the game with the launcher

Open the SOCOM Classic Launcher and choose Install or Update when a new game build is offered. Updates are cumulative, so you do not need to uninstall and reinstall or apply every earlier beta in sequence. Use the published release notes to see what is live; the 0.4.2-beta1 page is a coming-soon preview until both client and online servers are released.

Account and community guides

Sign in and save a player profile

You can play as a guest, but shared friends, clans, and saved account features require signing in to the SOCOM Classic account and saving a profile. In the game, open My Profile/Account and connect your Google account; on the website use My profile. Saving career stats and making your profile public are separate choices. A busy local sign-in port should trigger a retry on another approved port in the coming-soon 0.4.2-beta1 update; if sign-in still fails, note the exact message.

Profile privacy and player lists

In My profile, Make my player profile public controls whether your saved callsign, avatar, clan/rank badge, and career stats appear on public profile pages and the leaderboard. Show my saved profile in the online player list is a separate presence choice. Saving stats is also separate. Guest callsigns can still appear in a live lobby roster; a private profile does not publish private career totals.

Career stats, scoreboard and leaderboard

Hold Tab during a match to view both teams' scoreboard, including kills, deaths, assists, damage and score. Account-linked career stats are recorded from eligible online matches when tracking is enabled; bot practice is separate and does not affect competitive records. On the website, only public profiles appear on the leaderboard, which defaults to wins then kills and can be sorted by kills, K/D or wins. A leaderboard row number is not a military rank.

Friends and clans guides

Add a friend

Both players sign in and save profiles. In the game open Friends from Online/Game Lobby; on the website open My profile > Friends & clans. Copy your 32-character friend code and share it with the other player, or paste their code or SOCOM Classic profile link into Add a friend and choose Send friend request. The recipient must accept it under Incoming friend requests; sent requests can be cancelled. Display names alone are not unique and are not used as friend codes.

Remove or decline a friend

In the game open Friends, find the player under Friends, choose Remove and confirm. On the website open My profile > Friends & clans and use Remove friend beside their name. Incoming requests offer Accept and Decline; a request you sent can be cancelled. Removing a friend does not automatically remove that player from a clan; clan membership has separate controls.

Create a clan

Sign in, save a profile, then open Clans in the game or My profile > Friends & clans on the website. If you are not already in a clan, enter a unique clan name and tag and choose Create clan. You become its admin. A player can belong to one active clan at a time. Names are 3–24 characters and tags are up to five characters; the game and website validate allowed punctuation and uniqueness.

Invite or join a clan

A clan admin can invite a player from their Friends list. The invited player opens Clans in the game or My profile > Friends & clans on the website and chooses Join clan under Clan invitations. They may decline instead. You cannot join a second clan while still a member of another. Pending invitations can be withdrawn by the admin.

Manage or leave a clan

Clan admins can edit the name and tag, post a daily message, invite friends, remove members, withdraw invitations and transfer leadership in Clans or My profile > Friends & clans. Members can leave from the same screen. An admin must transfer leadership before leaving a clan with other members; if the last member leaves, the clan disbands. The public Clans page shows only members who opted to share a public profile.

Matches and gameplay guides

Choose weapons and equipment

Open Armory before a match to choose a player model, primary and secondary weapons, and equipment. In the current 0.4.1-beta4 build, the equipment/weapon picker supports D-pad navigation, and a dead player can edit the next-round loadout between rounds. Choose Done to save. The coming-soon 0.4.2-beta1 preview changes weapon selection to left/right cycling and adds descriptions for equipment; these changes are not published yet.

Vote for the next map

In online lobbies that offer Vote Next Map, the ballot appears before a match series and after a completed match, not between its individual rounds. Each connected human on a team gets one vote and may change or clear it while voting is open; bots and spectators do not vote. Select a map with mouse, Enter or the controller confirm button. The highest vote total wins. If nobody votes, the configured playlist or catalog order decides. The chosen map loads for everyone, then players return to the Ready lobby.

Choose day or night

Available maps offer Day and Night variants. In the online ballot, select a map, then Day or Night for that map. Changing the map resets your time choice to that map's authored default. The server counts time choices only from voters for the winning map; a tie keeps that map's default time. Offline choices are remembered for the current game session.

Join a lobby and ready up

From Online, choose a lobby, check its controller requirement, join a team and choose Ready in the Game Lobby. You can open Armory before the round. Controller-only rooms require a working controller for gameplay; mouse and keyboard remain available in menus. An all-ready start displays a countdown. Sleeping lobbies can wake when someone joins, so wait briefly for their status to change.

Bombs, hostages and match objectives

The objective depends on the map and mode: eliminate the other team, plant or defuse a bomb, rescue hostages or a VIP, or complete a map-specific task. The HUD and briefing identify the active objective. A planted bomb must be defused even if its planter dies; killing the planter alone is not a defuse. The coming-soon 0.4.2-beta1 preview adds explicit objective score for successful plants, detonations, defuses, rescues and explosive SEAL breaches.

Text and voice chat

Use lobby text chat to coordinate before play. In a live round, push-to-talk is Left Alt on keyboard or LB/L1 on a controller by default; microphone and playback settings are under Settings > Voice Chat. The coming-soon 0.4.2-beta1 preview adds text and voice chat for dead teammates while the round is active, restricted to other dead players on their team.

Watch or spectate a match

Spectating and recording controls depend on the build. The coming-soon 0.4.2-beta1 preview adds offline bot-match spectating with a freely movable camera and a HUD on/off option for clean captures. This preview feature is not in the published 0.4.1-beta4 game. Spectators do not cast map votes.

Practice and tools guides

Play against bots and use Paintball debug

Play vs Bots lets you practice offline. Aim Training is another local practice option. The coming-soon 0.4.2-beta1 preview adds a Debug menu with Paintball mode: unlimited player ammo, no reload, vivid bullet trails and large neon-green impact marks to inspect map collision. Paintball mode is a development aid and its marks do not change normal online weapon damage.
